Prices at the school canteen: Curry puff — $1.20 Soya milk — $0.90 Fishball noodles — $3.50 Iced Milo — $1.40 Wei Ming buys a curry puff and fishball noodles. Siti buys a soya milk and an iced Milo. How much do they spend altogether?
Add each person's items first, then add the two totals.
Wei Ming: $1.20 + $3.50 = $4.70
Siti: $0.90 + $1.40 = $2.30
$4.70 + $2.30 = $7.00
Common slip: reading the wrong row of the price list, or forgetting one of the four items. Point at each row as you add it.
Priya buys chicken rice for $4.30 and a barley drink for $1.15. She pays with a $10 note. How much change does she get?
First the total, then subtract from the note.
$4.30 + $1.15 = $5.45
$10.00 − $5.45 = $4.55
Common slip: subtracting from $10 before adding both items — that gives the change for one item only. Two steps, always in that order.
MRT fare from Jurong East to Bugis: Adult: $2.10 Student: $0.85 Hafiz is a student. He travels there and back home again. How much does he pay in total?
He is a student, so use the student row. "There and back" means two trips.
$0.85 × 2 = $1.70
Common slip: using the adult fare. Fare-table questions almost always put the wrong row within easy reach — check who the person is before picking a number.
A training workshop starts at 9:45 am and lasts 2 hours 30 minutes. What time does it end?
Add the hours first, then the minutes.
9:45 am + 2 hours = 11:45 am
11:45 am + 30 minutes = 12:15 pm
Common slip: the midday crossover. 11:45 plus 30 minutes becomes 12:15 pm, not 12:15 am — and the hour does not go to 13.
What is 3.7 × 10?
Multiplying by 10 moves every digit one place to the left.
3.7 → 37
Common slip: writing 3.70. Adding a zero after the decimal point does not change the value at all — 3.70 is the same as 3.7. This is the single most common decimal error we see, which is why the app has a whole mode for it.
14.6 + 9 = ?
Write the whole number with a decimal point so the columns line up.
14.6 + 9.0
= 23.6
Common slip: lining up the last digits instead of the decimal points, which turns the 9 into 0.9 and gives 15.5. Write the invisible ".0" before you start.
A packet holds 24 biscuits. Daniel eats one third of them. How many biscuits are left?
Find the fraction first, then answer the question that was asked.
⅓ of 24 = 24 ÷ 3 = 8 eaten
24 − 8 = 16 left
Common slip: answering 8. The working is right but the question asked how many are left, not how many were eaten. Re-read the last line before writing the answer.
A pencil is laid along a ruler. One end sits at the 3 cm mark and the other end sits at the 14 cm mark. How long is the pencil?
Length is the distance between the two marks, not the mark at the end.
14 cm − 3 cm = 11 cm
Common slip: answering 14 cm. That is only correct when the object starts at zero — and test questions deliberately start it somewhere else.
Over four weeks Nurul saved $12, $15, $9 and $16. What is the mean (average) amount she saved each week?
Add everything, then share it equally between the weeks.
$12 + $15 + $9 + $16 = $52
$52 ÷ 4 = $13
Common slip: dividing by the wrong number — count how many values there are, not how many you find easy to add.
A shop sold 145 bottles of water on Saturday and 98 bottles on Sunday. How many MORE bottles were sold on Saturday than on Sunday?
"How many more" means find the difference — subtract.
145 − 98 = 47 bottles
Common slip: adding, and answering 243. The words "how many more" look like a total but always mean subtract. It is worth teaching that phrase on its own.
